“It is only when we help others that we feel happier than when earning a lot of money,” said Muralidhar Koteshwar, MD of Avankia Group, United States, on Thursday, December 29th.
He was speaking after inaugurating a two-day international conference on "Social entrepreneurship as a means to achieve win-win situations: Global experiences, achievements and perspectives". It is being organised by the Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management, in association with the University of Pennsylvania, U.S., Erasmus University, Netherlands, and the University of New England, U.S.
Mr. Koteshwar said that as per the Companies Act of 2013, more than 22,000 companies would have to spend $3 billion annually on corporate social responsibility.
He said working with voluntary organisations helps build leadership skills. He suggested that students work as volunteers for a year or two as there is a need for social entrepreneurship.
Satyajit Majumdar of the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, School of Management and Labour Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, said Indian companies engage in CSR to be corporate citizens and improve their relationships with local communities. They see CSR as an opportunity to enhance their reputation or brand.
Through CSR, companies want to build a global corporate brand, improve relations with employees, enhance shareholder value, enhance their standing with the government and regulators, all the while complying with legislation, he said.
K. Sankaran, institute director, welcomed the gathering. N.K. Thingalaya, chairman of the institute’s academic council, and G.V. Joshi, event coordinator, were among those present.
